Visibility and safety when cycling: the essentials for riding in autumn and winter

With the days getting shorter, the clocks changing, and the rain inviting itself more often… However, there’s no question of putting the bike away! To keep cycling safely through autumn and winter, you just need to adapt your equipment. Being visible and well-prepared is the key to riding with peace of mind, whether you’re going to work or enjoying a ride. Here is our advice for staying clearly seen and safe, even when the weather isn't at its best.

Betting on good front and rear lighting

It's the number 1 piece of equipment for riding in the bad season.
Shorter days mean you need to see and be seen, even in the middle of the afternoon.

At the front:

  • A powerful LED light (minimum 200 lumens for the city, 400 to 800 for poorly lit roads).
  • Firmly fixed to the handlebars
  • USB rechargeable models are the most practical for everyday use.

At Joe Bike, we trust the Lezyne brand, recognised for its ultra-reliable and robust lighting. Their machined aluminium design ensures high resistance to rain and shocks, perfect for intensive year-round use.

At the back:

  • Flashing red light to attract motorists' attention.
  • To be fitted to the seatpost, the pannier rack or the helmet.

Wear visible and reflective clothing

Dark clothing blends into the night. Opting for bright colours and reflective elements can literally save lives.

Some essentials:

  • High-visibility vest (mandatory outside built-up areas at night, but recommended everywhere).
  • Reflective bands or straps to wear on the ankles or arms.
  • Helmets with reflective elements or integrated lights, increasingly popular.
  • High-visibility raincoats: protection + visibility = winning combo.

Choosing the right route and times

In winter, it's best to adapt your journeys to remain as visible as possible:

  • Promote well-lit cycle paths.
  • Avoid narrow or unlit roads if possible.
  • Anticipating departures: leaving five minutes earlier allows for calmer driving, especially when the road surface is wet.

Do not neglect the security of the bicycle itself

A well-maintained bike is also a safer bike. Before every ride:

  • Check brakes, tyres, and lights.
  • Clean the chain regularly (salt and moisture can corrode it quickly).
  • Lubricate cables and gears to prevent them from seizing in cold weather.

If you don't have the time or the equipment, pop into the Joe Bike workshop in Hossegor or Anglet for a full check. Our technicians can get your bike ready for winter!

In summary

Being visible on a bicycle in autumn and winter is a mix of common sense and well-chosen equipment:

  • Powerful and reliable front/rear lighting (like the Lezyne ones available at Joe Bike).
  • Reflective clothing and accessories.
  • Regular bicycle maintenance.
  • Journeys adapted to the light and the weather.

Riding all year round is possible! With the right equipment, safety and enjoyment remain guaranteed, even when the sun is scarce!
