Crossed by major secure cycle routes and awarded the Accueil Vélo label, Marennes offers a network of particularly flat paths ideal for gentle travel. It is the perfect starting point to drop off your panniers and explore protected natural areas and major heritage sites.
The landscape surrounding the commune is structured by a complex network of channels and marshes. The purpose-built cycle paths allow you to safely follow the Cayenne channel, connecting the town centre to artists' huts and oyster tasting spots. This entirely flat terrain is an invitation to wander, where you can cycle to the rhythm of the tides, amidst exceptionally rich birdlife. These routes are perfect for family outings, city bikes or child trailers, offering total immersion in the local maritime culture.
For cycle touring and long-distance cycling enthusiasts, Marennes is a key stop on the Vélodyssée, the famous European cycle route that runs along the Atlantic coast. From the town, cyclists can easily reach the Oléron Island bridge to venture onto the island's cycle paths, or head south by crossing the Seudre viaduct. This route opens the way to the Coubre forest and its miles of asphalt cycle paths laid out under pine trees, leading to the fine sandy beaches of La Palmyre and Royan.
Cycling around Marennes combines the pleasures of nature with the discovery of remarkable military and historical architecture. Marked routes lead to the citadel of Brouage, a former stronghold surrounded by marshes, located just a few kilometres to the north. Venturing further towards the estuary, country lanes and dykes lead to the famous Fort Louvois or Fort Boyard, visible offshore.
