This department in the South of France offers a unique transition between the gentle climate of Provence and the ruggedness of high mountains. Less urbanised than other areas, it guarantees cyclists quiet roads, exceptional sunshine, and wild panoramas of great beauty. From the lavender fields of the Valensole plateau to the summits of the Ubaye valley, the cycling routes cater to all levels of ability. The development of infrastructure and signposted routes, often awarded the Accueil Vélo label, greatly facilitates cycle touring or fixed base stays focused on discovering the region on two wheels.
The south of the department is home to Europe's largest canyon, whose cliffside roads form a world-renowned route for cycle touring. The famous Route des Crêtes offers dizzying views of the Verdon's emerald waters, a physically demanding but spectacular route. Further down, the shores of the Sainte-Croix and Esparron lakes offer gentler terrain, ideal for day trips. These routes allow you to combine cycling exertion with the pleasures of swimming and discovering hilltop villages like Moustiers-Sainte-Marie.
For cycling enthusiasts and lovers of elevation, the northern part of the department ventures into the world of high mountains. The Ubaye valley, around Barcelonnette, provides access to seven renowned mountain passes, including the Col d'Allos, the Col de la Cayolle, and the Col de Vars. The highlight of the region remains the Cime de la Bonette which, at an altitude of 2,802 metres, is one of the highest paved roads in Europe. These climbs offer long kilometres of effort amidst mineral landscapes and unspoilt alpine meadows.
The centre and west of the department offer hilly and plateau topography, conducive to more contemplative cycling. The Valensole plateau can be cycled through amidst expanses of lavender and wheat, particularly in early summer during the blooming season. The Forcalquier and Montagne de Lure area, on the other hand, offers bucolic routes connecting charming small villages away from traffic. It’s an ideal playground for electric bikes and gravel bikes, which make it easy to switch between small tarmacked roads and forest tracks.
