Cycling in Loudenvielle: our on-the-ground guide

In the cycling world, the Louron valley has become an essential benchmark. Loudenvielle has transformed into a true outdoor hub where all activities coexist. The village's major strength is its versatility. Down below, the terrain remains gentle and accessible to everyone. But thanks to the Skyvall cable car, you can reach high altitudes in less than ten minutes. It's one of the few places where you can go for a challenging mountain bike ride in the morning, a leisurely family stroll in the afternoon around the lake, and finish the day relaxing in the hot baths of Balnéa.

The lake and its XXL pump track: a paradise for riding and families

If you're looking for a recovery outing or a stress-free ride with the children, head for the lake's shores. The path that circles it is completely flat, nice and wide, and completely closed to cars.

Right next to the lake, you can't miss the village's main attraction: the giant pump track. With its blue asphalt lines, banked turns, and bumps, it's an incredible playground. Children love to ride round and round, while experienced riders spend hours honing their bike handling skills and fluidity without a single pedal stroke. It's the ideal spot to perfect your balance, test the agility of a mountain bike, or simply have fun at the end of the day with the mountains in front of you.

The Mecca of Enduro Mountain Biking

Loudenvielle's regular hosting of the Mountain Bike World Cup is no accident. The forests surrounding the village hide dozens of technical «singles» (narrow trails), full of roots, loose earth, and perfectly sculpted berms. Electric mountain biking (e-MTB) has also exploded here: specific uphill trails allow you to climb to the mountain pastures without getting exhausted, to then savour the descents.

At the foot of the Tour de France's legendary giants

For road cyclists, Loudenvielle is the ultimate test. From the centre of the village, you have two radical options. Either you turn left and tackle the Col de Peyresourde, a steady climb that takes you directly towards the Peyragudes altiport runway. Or you head right and face the Col de Val Louron-Azet, which is much wilder and more irregular. The advantage of staying at the bottom is that you start the hard work from fresh, but you always finish the ride with a descent or a free-wheeling return.

FAQ

It’s a proper Pyrenean pass, so yes, it’s tough. It’s just over 7 kilometres long, with an average gradient of nearly 8 % from the village. The difficulty lies mainly in the changes in gradient: some sections exceed 9 or 10 % through the pastures. If you’re riding a standard road bike, make sure you have a very low gear ratio (such as 34 teeth at the rear). If you’re in any doubt, opt for an electric road bike – that’ll let you tackle every section with a smile.
The big advantage of this asphalt pumptrack is that it accepts almost anything. Children have fun on it on scooters or BMX bikes, but you can also ride it with a hardtail mountain bike or even a full-suspension bike (by locking out the suspension to avoid losing pumping energy). It's an excellent exercise to warm up before hitting the real downhill trails.
It's super simple. The departure station is located right next to the village centre and the Balnéa complex. You get into the cabin directly with your bike (the cabins are equipped to accommodate them, whether it's a road bike, a heavy mountain bike, or an electric one). In 9 minutes, you'll be at the top at the Peyragudes station. It's perfect for avoiding the road climb on your mountain bike or for linking up enduro descents all day long.
The lake circuit remains the best option, with a mandatory stop at the pumptrack on the green areas dedicated to beginners. If you want to go a bit further, there are groomed multi-activity paths along the river (the Neste) towards the neighbouring villages. It's flat, shaded, very easy to ride and away from traffic. It's also ideal if you're hiring a child trailer or a bike with a baby seat.
