The lake/ocean link and the pine forest paths
The cycle path linking Lacanau-Ville to Lacanau-Océan is a must. Approximately 12 kilometres long, it winds its way through the heart of the maritime pine forest. Contrary to popular belief, this route crosses the dune cordon and has a «rollercoaster» profile with a succession of short but repetitive undulations. It's the ideal playground for our electric bikes, which help to smooth out the effort, especially on the return from the beach against the westerly wind.
The mythical axis of the Vélodyssée
Lacanau is a major stop on the Vélodyssée, this European cycle route that is entirely safe and separated from cars. From the station, you can embark on superb day trips. Head north towards Carcans-Plage and Lake Hourtin, or head south towards Le Porge and the Cap Ferret peninsula. The tarmac paths offer excellent performance for our lightweight hybrid bikes, perfect for racking up the miles with complete peace of mind.
The seafront at Lacanau-Océan
During peak season, cycling is your best shortcut to avoid traffic jams and packed paid car parks. Our city and cruiser bikes, equipped with baskets and robust locks, allow you to park for free as close as possible to the waves (North, Central, and South beaches) and instantly switch from the beach to the lively terraces in the town centre.
In Lacanau, the cycling infrastructure goes beyond a simple tourist excursion: it's a genuine green motorway on its own dedicated path, completely separated from car traffic. Designed along the routes of old railway lines and forest firebreaks, this network of tarmac or smooth bitumen paths offers exceptional efficiency and complete safety. You cycle through the heart of a protected state forest, connecting the lake beaches to the ocean waves without ever encountering an exhaust pipe. The fluid trajectories and wide bends of the Lacanau network make it the ideal playground for covering distance at a steady pace or for letting children ride side-by-side in complete peace of mind.
Understanding the geography of Lacanau is essential for planning your bike rides. The territory is divided into three distinct ecosystems, each dictating its own pedalling pace. To the east, dirt tracks and flat paths border the freshwater lake, offering perfect conditions for leisurely cycle touring, sheltered from the wind. To the west, the landscape transforms radically as you approach the coast: crossing the dune cordon results in a succession of false flats and short, sharp bumps. This terrain, typical of the Gascogne Landes, combined with the sea breeze that generally picks up in the afternoon, demands more rigorous effort management for anyone venturing onto the transversal tracks linking the town to the ocean.
The quality of the Lacanau cycle network lies in the variety and maintenance of its infrastructure. The main routes, such as the former railway line or the local section of the Vélodyssée, benefit from a smooth, high-performance tarmac coating, ideal for road bikes and hybrid bikes. Diverting from these major arteries, cyclists can access the DFCI (Forest Fire Defence) forest tracks, which offer a looser surface made of compacted limestone, gravel, and pine needles. This unique network allows for an easy transition from endurance training on tarmac to a wilder exploration in the undergrowth, making the Médoc peninsula a comprehensive playground for all tyre widths.
