A good clean to get back on solid ground
How to properly clean your bike?
Materials needed a bucket of warm water, a sponge, a soft brush, a dry cloth and a special bike degreaser.
- Step 1 Wipe the frame, forks and handlebars with a soapy cloth.
- Step 2 Clean the chain, chainrings and cassette with a brush and degreaser.
- Step 3 Rinse thoroughly with clean water, avoiding spraying high-pressure water on the bearings (headset, hubs, bottom bracket).
- Step 4 Dry the bike with a clean cloth to prevent rust.
Transmission check and adjustment
The drivetrain (chain, cassette, derailleurs, crankset) is one of the most stressed parts of a bicycle. Poor adjustment can lead to difficult gear changes, or even the risk of the chain dropping.
- Chain wear: use a wear indicator tool or measure with a ruler (a chain that is too stretched must be replaced).
- Cables and linings: if they are frayed or oxidised, it's time to change them.
- Gear adjustment: Spin the rear wheel and change gears to check that they shift smoothly.
If your gears are jumping or struggling to change, your derailleur needs adjusting. Feel free to pop into the workshop for a precise tune-up!
Brake check: your safety first!
Brakes in good condition are essential for safe riding. Depending on your type of brakes (calliper or disc), the checks will differ.
Caliper brakes (V-brake, road, etc.)
- Check the thickness of the pads: if they are too worn, replace them.
- Test the tension of the cables: if they are too loose, tighten them with the adjustment knob.
Disc brakes
- Look at the condition of the brake pads: if they are less than 1 mm thick, they need to be replaced.
- If your braking is spongy, bleed the hydraulic circuit.
Final test: Before setting off, test your brakes at low speed to ensure they respond well.
Tyre pressure and condition: the right compromise between comfort and performance
Under-inflated tyres increase the risk of punctures and make pedalling harder. Over-inflated tyres, on the other hand, can be uncomfortable and offer less grip.
What to check?
- The condition of the tyres If they are cracked or worn out, it's time to replace them.
- The pressure : it depends on the type of bike and the cyclist's weight. Generally:
VTT : 1.8 to 2.5 bar
Road bike: 6 to 8 bar
Electric or urban bike: 3 to 4.5 bar - Use a pump with a pressure gauge to adjust the pressure to the correct level.
Joe Bike Tip: If you're heading out for long rides, always bring a spare inner tube and a repair kit.
Lubrication: for smooth and durable transmission
After cleaning, it is important to properly lubricate the moving parts to prevent premature wear.
What to lubricate?
- The chain Use a suitable oil (dry for summer, wet for wet conditions). Apply a small amount and wipe off any excess with a clean cloth.
- The derailleur and cables a few drops of oil on the pivots and casings prevent rust and ensure smoother operation.
- The bearings (bottom bracket, headset, hubs) If you feel any play, greasing at the workshop may be necessary.
Checking accessories and equipment
Before summer, take advantage of the time to check your essential accessories and equipment:
- Lighting: check the battery status or the charge of rechargeable lights.
- The lock: ensure it is in good condition and works correctly.
- The helmet: it must be well-fitted and in good condition (replace it after an impact).
- Saddlebags and pannier racks: check the fastenings to ensure accessories do not detach while riding.
