Preparing your bike for summer: the expert guide to riding safely

The arrival of good weather and rising temperatures mark the return of long walks and daily bike rides. Whether you're a city cyclist or a lover of wild excursions, your bike needs special attention after winter or before facing the summer heat. At Joe Bicycle, our technicians see hundreds of bikes pass through each season. To prevent you from breaking down in the middle of nowhere, here are the essential checks for a successful summer service.

Pneumatic diagnostics: don't neglect ground contact

In summer, descents can be long and put enormous strain on your braking system.

  • Brake pads Check the wear on the rubber and the alignment on the rim. If the grooves are no longer visible, it's time to change them.
  • Disc brakes Check the thickness of the brake pads. If you hear a metallic grinding noise, don't wait: you risk damaging your discs.

Transmission: drive smoothly

A dry or dirty chain results in an unpleasant noise and premature wear of your sprockets.

  • Clean Use a degreaser to remove winter residue.
  • Lubricate Apply a «dry conditions» lubricant (Dry Lub). Unlike winter lubes, they do not attract dust and sand, keeping your drivetrain cleaner for longer.

Special E-bike offer: pamper your battery

If you're riding an electric bike, the battery is your most valuable component. It is susceptible to extreme temperatures.

  • Storage Never leave your bike (or battery) in the midday sun. Park in the shade to prevent overheating of the cells.
  • The connectors When you're doing your service, take the opportunity to clean the battery contacts with a dry cloth.
