Winter is a demanding time for your bike. Between the damp, the cold and sometimes the salt on the roads, it's crucial to prepare your bike so that it stays in good condition all season long. Here's a complete guide to maintaining your bike and riding with peace of mind, whatever the conditions.
Clean your bike thoroughly
Start with a good clean. Remove mud, dust and residues that can accelerate wear on parts. Use lukewarm water, a degreaser suitable for the chain and soft brushes for delicate areas. After washing, be sure to dry your bike thoroughly to prevent rust.
Lubricate the chain and components
Winter humidity can damage the chain and derailleurs. Apply a specific lubricant for wet conditions to protect these essential parts. Remember to wipe off any excess to prevent dirt from accumulating.
Check the brakes
Brakes are under particular strain in winter, especially on slippery or wet roads. Make sure that the brake pads are not worn and that the cables are tight. An overhaul in our workshop may be a good alternative to check that everything is OK.
Check tyres and tyre pressure
In winter, choose wider tyres with good grip to avoid slipping. Reduce the pressure slightly for better grip, but don't go too low to avoid the risk of a puncture.
Protect your bike
If you store your bike outside, consider investing in a waterproof cover. For electric bikes, remove the battery and store it indoors to avoid damage from the cold.
