A very nice circuit to do with a road bike, starting from the Joe Bike shop in Anglet. After a warm-up on the urban cycle paths of Anglet and Bayonne, the circuit picks up speed on long straights along the north banks of the Adour. It's a lovely, gentle walk to the small village of Urt.
The road then begins to rise a little, with two or three junctions where you can pass a few cars, and fairly quickly you change to a small road on the right with its first beautiful winding climb that takes you past the monastery of Labastide Clairence. Follow this little balcony road as it rises and falls, offering some very fine views of the mountains of the basque country. There are also some beautiful farmhouses to see, before arriving in Hasparren, where you need to pay close attention to the GPS to find a second splendid little balcony road, again with breathtaking views over the Basque country along the magnificent Hasparren municipal forest. You'll feel the difference in altitude all the way to the summit of the Mouguerre cross but it won't take very long. Next comes the descent and the return to the urban environment. Without getting lost, you return to the urban cycle lanes south of the Adour this time to make your way quietly back to the shop.
Distance : 68km
Duration : 3h
Leaving the shop and after 4 km, cross Bayonne to join the small road that follows La Nive to Ustaritz. The first 20 kilometres are an excellent warm-up to prepare your legs for what's to come. After passing through Ustaritz, the gradient begins to rise gently. The road climbs and descends steadily, passing through small villages with typical Basque architecture, until you reach Cambo-les-Bains. After leaving Cambo-les-Bains, drive for less than 1km on the main road, the D918, as far as Itsasu. There's a wide shoulder and we're only on it for a few minutes. After turning right onto the D918 at Itsasu, we follow the Rue d'Espelette or D249. This road is the high point of the tour. We then arrive in Espelette, a village famous the world over for the peppers that bear its name. After leaving Espelette, it's time for the steepest climb of the day, with an average gradient of 3% over its 1.95 km, but with gradients of over 20%.
About 8 km after Espelette, before the Forêt d'Ustaritz, we have the option of turning left and descending towards Lac de Saint-Pée. This is a good option if we want to add a little distance to our journey, but the climb back up from the lake can be quite difficult.
We hope you enjoy this itinerary as much as we do!
Distance : 76km
Duration : 3h30
This route is relatively flat for the first part, which follows the banks of the Adour. You'll be riding in complete tranquillity close to the river, which is very pleasant. As soon as you leave the water's edge, the road rises a little. The transition becomes abrupt as you climb the hill to the top of the Saint-Martin-de-Hinx water tower. Don't worry, it's not very long and the rest is a succession of false flats with climbs and descents that will take you through the small villages of Saint-Martin-de-Hinx, Saubrigues, Orx, Saint-André-de-Seignanx and Saint-Martin-de-Seignanx, before returning to the starting point.
Don't forget to keep your eyes peeled as you drive along the Marais d'Orx, a nature reserve listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This route takes you mainly along small roads with very little traffic. There are no major difficulties on this route, apart from its length and the time it takes to complete this beautiful loop.
